Mount Kenya University (MKU) has once again underlined its growing dominance in university sports after finishing third overall at the 10th Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) National Games, posting an impressive haul of 21 gold, 25 silver and 26 bronze medals.

The standout performers were MKU’s swimming team—popularly known as the “Sharks”—who lit up the championships with spirited, disciplined and confident performances that drew admiration from fans and rivals alike.

Sharks Steal the Spotlight

Clad in matching MKU swimwear and caps, the Sharks embodied unity and purpose as they marched poolside carrying a banner boldly inscribed “Unlocking Infinite Possibilities.” Their performances delivered a significant portion of MKU’s medal tally, reinforcing the university’s reputation as one of Kenya’s most competitive institutions in aquatic sports.

The swimmers’ consistency, technical execution and fighting spirit proved decisive in MKU’s strong overall showing at the national games.

Narrow Miss at the Summit

Despite the stellar performance, MKU narrowly missed the overall championship by just three gold medals, highlighting how competitive this year’s games were.

  • USIU–Africa clinched the overall title with 24 gold, 13 silver and 21 bronze medals.
  • Kenyatta University finished second with 23 gold, 22 silver and 26 bronze medals.
  • Mount Kenya University secured third place, demonstrating depth and consistency across multiple disciplines.

Rising Stars Across Disciplines

Beyond swimming, MKU showcased impressive talent across a wide range of sports:

  • Karate (“Young Tacs”) – debutants from the September 2025 intake who stunned seasoned opponents with resilience and composure.
  • Badminton (men and women)
  • Tennis (men)
  • Table Tennis (men and women)
  • Darts (men)
  • Athletics (men and women), despite the absence of key athletes currently training with the Kenya Army and Police.
  • Taekwondo (men and women)

The breadth of medal-winning teams underlined MKU’s commitment to nurturing all-round sporting excellence.

Branding, Style and Team Spirit

MKU’s athletes stood out not only for their results but also for their professional presentation. Competing in custom-designed university jerseys, the teams traveled in style aboard the digital sports bus and the newly acquired Marco Polo bus, a clear statement of the institution’s growing investment in sports and creative arts.

Leadership Applauds Athletes

MKU’s Sports, Film, Creative and Performing Arts Coordinator, Mr. William Luta, praised the athletes for their discipline, teamwork and determination.

He noted that the results reflect sustained effort and emphasized the importance of upgrading training facilities and increasing participation in both competitive and friendly tournaments to boost exposure and confidence among students.

Eyes on 2026

As celebrations continue, MKU has already turned its focus to 2026, pledging greater investment in talent development and more competitive outings as the university aims to climb even higher on the national stage.

With the Sharks leading the charge and young stars emerging across disciplines, Mount Kenya University’s sporting future looks brighter than ever.
