EACC Raid on Governor Natembeya’s Kitale Home Sparks Political Uproar

Natembeya

On Monday, May 19, 2025, a contingent of plainclothes officers, reportedly from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), raided the Milimani residence of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya in Kitale. The operation, which began around 7:00 a.m., was part of an investigation into alleged procurement irregularities, abuse of office, bribery, and fraudulent acquisition of public funds totaling approximately Sh1.4 billion.

The raid quickly escalated into a politically charged event. Supporters of Governor Natembeya gathered outside his home, protesting the operation and accusing the government of using state agencies to intimidate political opponents. The Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K), to which Natembeya belongs, condemned the raid, likening it to tactics used during the Moi era and asserting that such actions are attempts to settle political scores.

Wamalwa Arrive’s at Natembeya’s Home

Former Cabinet Secretary and DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa arrived at the scene alongside several Members of County Assembly (MCAs). Wamalwa stated that Governor Natembeya was not at home during the raid and was safe in Nairobi. He criticized the operation as the “worst form of intimidation” by the government.

The EACC confirmed the raid, stating that it was conducted with a valid search warrant as part of ongoing investigations into significant financial misconduct within the Trans Nzoia County government.

This incident follows warnings from Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who, during a rally in Machakos on Sunday, alleged that the EACC had obtained a search warrant to investigate Natembeya’s properties with the intent to arrest and embarrass him.

As the situation develops, the public and political observers await further details from the EACC regarding the findings of the raid and any subsequent legal actions.
