Newcastle United have agreed a £55m deal to sign Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga, making him their first major summer signing ahead of the Champions League return.

Newcastle United have reportedly reached a £55 million ($75 million) agreement with Nottingham Forest to sign Swedish winger Anthony Elanga, making him the Magpies’ first major signing of the summer transfer window.

Multiple credible sources — including The Athletic, BBC Sport, and Sky Sports — confirmed on Tuesday that Elanga is set to complete a move to St James’ Park after personal terms were agreed in principle. The 22-year-old is expected to undergo a medical later this week.

Elanga, who joined Forest from Manchester United two years ago for just £15 million, has seen his market value soar after an outstanding 2024/25 Premier League season. He was instrumental in Forest’s surprise seventh-place finish — their best in recent history — contributing six goals and 11 assists.

The winger’s explosive pace, dribbling ability, and vision in the final third made him a standout performer and caught the attention of several top clubs across Europe. However, Newcastle appear to have won the race for his signature.

The transfer comes as Newcastle prepare for their long-awaited return to the UEFA Champions League next season. The club, owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), has ambitions of challenging at the highest level, but has been constrained by the Premier League’s financial sustainability regulations.

Despite their vast financial backing and a League Cup victory last season, the Magpies have had to tread carefully in the transfer market. Their pursuit of Elanga signals a renewed intent to compete among England and Europe’s elite.

Forest, on the other hand, are expected to make a sizeable profit from Elanga’s sale, which could bolster their own transfer plans. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo has hinted at a summer rebuild, and the club may now look to reinvest in key areas.

Elanga’s departure will be a blow to Forest fans, who had grown fond of the Sweden international’s energy and work ethic. However, the player is said to be excited about the opportunity to play Champions League football and continue his development under Eddie Howe at Newcastle.

The move could also boost Elanga’s international career, as Sweden look to rebuild ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
