Nairobi, Kenya — July 8, 2025
Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has officially resigned from his role as Senior Economic Advisor to President William Ruto. The controversial political figure announced his departure Monday evening through a social media post, capping off a decade-long journey in public service and signaling the start of a new chapter in his political career.
Kuria revealed that he had met with President Ruto earlier in the evening to communicate his decision to step down, which the President “graciously accepted.”
“This evening I have met my boss and my friend, President William Ruto. The President has graciously accepted my decision to resign from government,” Kuria stated in his post.
“As I move on to pursue personal interests, I am proud of the work the President and I did to implement the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which I designed together with the President as our 2022 Electoral Platform. Long Live Kenya.”
The announcement marks the end of a notable tenure in Ruto’s administration. Kuria previously served as Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry for 11 months before transitioning to the Ministry of Public Service, Delivery and Performance Management for 9 months. He was later appointed as a Senior Economic Advisor to the Council of Economic Advisors, a position he held for the past 10 months.
His re-entry into government followed the turbulent Gen Z-led protests of mid-2024, which shook the administration and prompted a drastic Cabinet reshuffle by the President. Kuria, despite being ousted alongside other ministers, was retained in a senior advisory role—an indication of Ruto’s continued confidence in his strategic economic insight.
Political analysts suggest that Kuria’s resignation could signal broader realignments within Kenya Kwanza or a personal rebranding effort ahead of 2027. His reference to pursuing “personal interests” has only fueled speculation about his future ambitions, particularly with murmurs of possible alignment with opposition factions.
While Kuria remained tight-lipped about what lies ahead, he reaffirmed his pride in his collaborative work with the President, especially on the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which formed the core of their 2022 campaign.
As reactions trickled in from across the political spectrum, allies and critics alike acknowledged Kuria’s impact and influence within the government, especially in the trade and economic planning spaces. Whether his exit is temporary or a strategic political reset remains to be seen.
