Kisumu, Kenya – Friday, August 8, 2025

At least 21 people are feared dead following a grisly road accident at the Mamboleo Coptic Roundabout in Kisumu involving a bus belonging to AIC Naki High School.

The bus, which was ferrying mourners from a funeral, reportedly lost control near the roundabout before ramming into other vehicles and overturning. Eyewitnesses described the scene as “devastating,” with many victims trapped inside the mangled wreckage.

Emergency responders, including the Kenya Red Cross, police, and Kisumu County disaster teams, rushed to the site. Survivors were pulled from the bus and rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital with serious injuries.

Kisumu County Police Commander confirmed that 21 fatalities have been recorded so far, but rescue operations are still ongoing.

“We can confirm that 21 people have lost their lives in this tragic accident. Several others are in critical condition. We are working tirelessly to rescue anyone who might still be trapped,” he said.

Preliminary investigations suggest possible mechanical failure, although speeding has not been ruled out. The accident caused heavy traffic on the Kisumu–Kakamega road as police secured the area and facilitated rescue work.

Authorities have urged families of the victims to remain calm and await official identification and communication from the relevant agencies.
