In many of these circles, having a voter’s card is no longer optional—it is becoming a social requirement.
Some groups have gone as far as making voter registration a “ticket” into their inner circles, with non-registered members reportedly being sidelined or excluded from group activities.
‘No Voter’s Card, No Friendship’ Trend Gains Momentum
The movement has gained traction online, with influencers and activists openly encouraging peers to prioritise civic participation.
Kenyan social media user Jennifer Wanjiku sparked debate after posting:
“If they are your friends and they are not registered as a voter, cut them off!”
Activist Ademba Allans has also been at the forefront, urging youth to verify their voter status through the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) portal.
In viral videos, young Kenyans proudly display their voter verification details, reinforcing the message that political participation is now part of youth identity.

A viral trend known as the “Small Circle” challenge has further amplified the movement.
Content creators are posting videos introducing their close-knit friend groups—while proving that each member is a registered voter.
One widely shared clip by TikTok creator Lixine Vela, which has amassed over 280,000 views and 50,000 likes, shows friends enjoying social moments while displaying their voter acknowledgement slips.
Another trending video features a group outing where friends ditch leisure plans and instead visit an IEBC centre to register together.
Creative Civic Engagement Ideas Emerge
The movement is also inspiring creative approaches to civic engagement.
X user Will Olwande proposed hosting a concert where entry is tied to voter registration, with incentives such as discounted access for registered voters.
Meanwhile, voices like:

have publicly backed the initiative, urging youth to sustain the momentum and turn civic participation into a social norm.
“We will end the apathy one registration, one selfie, one video at a time,” Hanifa said.
