Lugari, Kakamega County – National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called for unity among the people of Western Kenya as the region prepares for the 2027 General Election. Speaking at the Chekalini Chiefs Ground in Lugari Constituency during a Women Economic Empowerment Program hosted by area MP Nabii Nabwera, Wetang’ula emphasized the importance of solidarity in advancing the community’s interests nationally.
“The Western region must speak in one united voice. We have come a long way in the leadership of this country,” said Wetang’ula. He highlighted that the Speakership—his current role—is the third-highest office in the nation and should not be underestimated.
Wetang’ula urged the people of Kakamega and the broader Western region to remain steadfast in supporting President William Ruto’s government, noting that ongoing projects in road infrastructure, electricity connectivity, and the revival of sugar factories will significantly spur local development. “Our farmers must be paid fairly and on time for their sugarcane, and our factories must run efficiently to benefit the region,” he remarked.
The Speaker also stressed the need for civic education and mobilization to ensure residents acquire national identity cards and register with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to strengthen their political voice.
He assured locals of continued collaboration with key leaders from the region, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Cooperatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, to champion Western Kenya’s development agenda.
The event, attended by leaders from the region, emphasized women’s empowerment as a cornerstone of inclusive development. MP Emmanuel Wangwe hailed the program as a crucial step in uplifting women and building stronger, more resilient communities.
The Women Economic Empowerment Program in Lugari is part of a broader initiative to empower women across the country, providing them with the tools and resources needed to improve their economic standing and contribute to national development.
As the 2027 elections approach, Wetang’ula’s call for unity serves as a reminder of the power of collective action and the importance of a united front in achieving the region’s political and developmental goals.
