A Nairobi court has ordered the continued detention of Kimunye Musyimi, a 55-year-old man accused of killing a General Service Unit (GSU) officer near State House, for 14 days to allow further investigations into the shocking incident. The accused, who appeared before the court on Tuesday, was visibly limping and required the support of police officers as he entered the courtroom. Although he requested medical attention, the court ruled that he would remain in custody as the inquiry continues.

According to police reports, Musyimi is alleged to have travelled from Makueni County to Nairobi on Sunday evening before launching a violent attack outside Gate D, along Dennis Pritt Road, on Monday morning. Witnesses said the suspect, armed with a bow and arrows, approached security personnel manning the gate. Despite repeated warnings and instructions to surrender, he allegedly shot an arrow that struck Constable Ramadhan Mattanka in the ribs.

Constable Mattanka was immediately rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where medical teams battled to save his life. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. The tragic death has since sparked widespread outrage, with many condemning the senseless act of violence against a police officer carrying out his duty.

The National Police Service (NPS) described the attack as “heinous and unprovoked,” expressing sorrow over the loss of one of their officers. In an official statement, NPS commended the swift response of other officers at the scene, whose quick action prevented further casualties and ensured the suspect’s arrest. Authorities confirmed that the suspect was subdued and taken into custody shortly after the incident.

Detectives handling the case have since launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the motive behind the attack. Preliminary findings suggest that Musyimi may have planned the assault, though police have yet to establish whether he acted alone or was influenced by external factors. Investigators are also awaiting a post-mortem report from Kenyatta National Hospital to determine the exact cause of Constable Mattanka’s death and to strengthen their case against the suspect.

During the court proceedings, prosecutors requested that the suspect remain in police custody for at least two weeks, arguing that releasing him would interfere with ongoing investigations. The magistrate agreed, granting police 14 days to complete their inquiries. Musyimi is expected to return to court after the period expires, where charges could be formally filed depending on the outcome of the investigation.

The killing of Constable Mattanka has reignited discussions about police safety and mental health, particularly concerning individuals who pose unexpected threats near critical government installations. The NPS has urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers and report any suspicious activity that may endanger national security.

The officer’s colleagues and family members are mourning his death, describing him as a dedicated and disciplined officer who served his country with honour. Meanwhile, the suspect remains under tight security as the investigation unfolds, with authorities promising transparency and justice for the fallen officer.
