As Kenya prepares to lay former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga to rest, Kenya Airways has announced an increase in flights to Kisumu to accommodate the overwhelming demand from mourners traveling to attend the burial. The national carrier has added several additional flights on the Nairobi–Kisumu route, particularly during peak morning and evening hours, to cater to the thousands expected to travel to western Kenya for the state funeral.
According to officials from Kenya Airways, the airline is working closely with government agencies and the state funeral committee to ensure smooth logistics throughout the mourning period. The carrier has also coordinated with Kisumu International Airport management to facilitate seamless operations, given the expected influx of travelers.
The surge in flight demand has led to a significant increase in ticket prices. Over the past few days, one-way fares between Nairobi and Kisumu have risen sharply from the usual KSh 8,000–10,000 range to between KSh 18,000 and KSh 23,000. Most flights have already been fully booked through the weekend, as mourners, dignitaries, and political delegations make their way to Kisumu and Siaya County to pay their final respects.
Travel agencies in Nairobi and Kisumu have reported a flurry of last-minute bookings, with many Kenyans opting to adjust their travel dates or explore alternative routes due to the limited availability of flights. Some have even turned to road transport, leading to an expected rise in traffic along major highways heading to western Kenya.
In addition to Kenya Airways, other domestic airlines such as Jambojet and Safarilink have also recorded full bookings on most of their Kisumu flights. Airline operators say they are monitoring demand closely and may consider adding more flights if necessary.
The heightened travel activity reflects the immense national significance of Raila Odinga’s passing. As a long-serving opposition leader, reformist, and one of Kenya’s most influential political figures, his funeral has drawn attention from across the country and beyond. Many Kenyans are determined to travel to Kisumu to participate in the public viewing and funeral service scheduled before his interment in Siaya County.
Kenya Airways’ decision to expand its flight operations demonstrates both logistical preparedness and national solidarity, ensuring that mourners can travel safely and efficiently during this emotionally charged period.
