Bungoma Unveils Five-Year BCTRH Plan to Improve Health Services

In Western Kenya

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has launched the 2025–2030 Strategic Plan for the Bungoma County Teaching and Referral Hospital (BCTRH), outlining ambitious reforms aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in the county and the wider Western Kenya region.

Speaking during the hospital’s end-year staff celebration, Governor Lusaka said the plan underscores the county government’s commitment to positioning BCTRH as a centre of excellence offering quality, patient-centred and compassionate healthcare services.

The governor noted that Bungoma County has already made significant strides in expanding medical services, strengthening health systems, improving partnerships and enhancing the hospital’s role as a teaching and referral institution. He said the newly launched strategic plan builds on these achievements.

“The plan we have launched today is more than just a document; it is a promise to our people,” Lusaka said.

He explained that the five-year roadmap prioritises modern infrastructure development, adoption of new technologies, acquisition of medical equipment, staff training and welfare, research and innovation, as well as financial sustainability.

Addressing persistent staffing challenges in the health sector, Lusaka acknowledged existing shortages but revealed that the county has recently recruited additional technical and support staff. He assured residents that recruitment efforts will continue.

In a major boost to specialised care, the governor pledged county funding to recruit four key medical specialists—an oncologist, psychiatrist, neurosurgeon and pathologist—a move expected to elevate BCTRH to a fully functional Level Five hospital.

On infrastructure development, Lusaka announced plans to construct new administration, medical and surgical blocks, with the aim of decongesting the facility and bringing an end to the practice of bed-sharing among patients.

“Over the next five years, BCTRH will not only respond to illness but help shape the future of healthcare in our region,” he said.

The governor praised the hospital’s management, board and staff for their dedication and service to the people of Bungoma County.

The event was attended by Deputy Governor Janepher Mbatiany, Head of Public Service William Nasong’o, Health and Sanitation CECM CPA Chrispinus Barasa, Chief Officer Dr Magrima Mayama, County Director of Health Dr Caleb Watta, and BCTRH Medical Superintendent Dr Simon Kisaka, among other county officials and healthcare workers.
