All eyes will be on the Grand Stade de Tanger on Tuesday evening as Senegal and Benin square off in a decisive Group D encounter at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025, with a place in the Round of 16 firmly on the line.
Senegal head into the final group match sitting on four points from two games. The Lions of Teranga launched their campaign in commanding fashion with a 3–0 victory over Botswana before being held to a draw by DR Congo.
A single point will be enough to secure Senegal’s passage to the knockout stages, while a win would confirm their status as group winners.
Benin, however, face a more demanding task — and approach the contest with everything to play for. After suffering an opening defeat to DR Congo, the Squirrels reignited their qualification hopes by beating Botswana to register their first-ever AFCON win in open play.
Victory against Senegal would guarantee Benin automatic qualification, while even a draw could prove sufficient depending on other group results.
Despite Senegal’s billing as tournament favourites, head coach Pape Thiaw has urged his side to remain grounded, warning that reputation alone will not secure progress.
“Discipline, humility and execution will be key,” Thiaw has stressed, as his team looks to finish the group stage strongly.
Defender Moussa Niakhaté echoed that caution, acknowledging Benin’s organisation and recent performances as evidence of their growing threat.
From a statistical standpoint, Senegal remain one of the tournament’s most reliable sides. They are unbeaten in their last nine AFCON group-stage matches and have conceded just seven goals in their previous 21 matches at the competition.
Star forward Sadio Mané continues to be Senegal’s attacking focal point. His goal against DR Congo took his AFCON tally to 10 goals across five tournament editions, underlining his enduring influence on the continental stage.
Benin, meanwhile, arrive in Tangier fueled by belief rather than fear. Captain Steve Mounié has made it clear that his side are not content with merely participating, insisting they are chasing victory.
His leadership has grown in prominence, with his assist against Botswana highlighting his importance in decisive moments. Head coach Gernot Rohr has emphasised the need for defensive discipline while exploiting counter-attacks and set pieces.
Historically, Senegal hold the advantage, remaining unbeaten in eight previous meetings against Benin. But with qualification at stake and momentum building on both sides, past records may count for little.
As Group D reaches its dramatic conclusion, Tuesday’s clash promises a tense and compelling battle — one where fine margins could determine who advances and who bows out of AFCON 2025.
