Convoy truck linked to Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi faction was stoned on Friday morning at Kona Mbaya trading centre in Kisumu County while en route to Kakamega for a rally scheduled for Saturday, February 21.
Footage shared by Sifuna on his social media platforms shows panic inside the vehicle as stones were hurled at a multimillion-shilling sound truck that forms part of the faction’s grassroots mobilisation campaign.
The truck, which was transporting public address systems and other campaign equipment, was travelling as part of a larger convoy moving from Nairobi through western Kenya ahead of the weekend rally. Despite the disruption, no injuries were reported and the convoy proceeded with its journey.
The incident comes against the backdrop of growing political friction within the opposition, particularly inside the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The Linda Mwananchi tour is led by Sifuna alongside Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi and Siaya Governor James Orengo.
Organisers say the convoy attack is the latest in a series of setbacks that have trailed the tour in recent weeks.
On February 15, a previous rally in Kitengela was violently disrupted after police moved in to disperse supporters. Witnesses reported heavy use of teargas and alleged gunfire during the chaos. One person, identified as Vincent Ayomo, was fatally shot, an incident that triggered widespread condemnation and renewed debate over the policing of political gatherings.
The stoning of the sound truck has intensified concerns over the safety of political mobilisations in the region, especially as rival factions within ODM and the wider opposition space continue to clash over strategy and leadership direction.
Ahead of the Kakamega rally, security has been heightened, with local leaders and organisers urging supporters to remain calm and avoid confrontations that could escalate into violence.
Sifuna has repeatedly described the Linda Mwananchi tour as a platform for accountability and people-centred leadership, saying the movement is aimed at reconnecting opposition politics with ordinary citizens. In his response to the latest incident, the Nairobi senator vowed that the team would not be intimidated by disruptions and would continue with the mobilisation drive across western Kenya.
The Kakamega rally is expected to proceed as planned under increased security presence.
