Migori County, March 22, 2026 – Tragedy struck Kawa Shopping Centre on Sunday evening when a lorry transporting bricks lost control and rammed into a shop, killing two people and injuring three others.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle, heading towards Isebania, accelerated uncontrollably before smashing into a perimeter wall and crashing into the shop.

This incident is the sixth accident reported at the small shopping centre since the bypass was commissioned, bringing the total fatalities in the area to eight. Traders are now urging authorities to redesign and properly mark the bypass to prevent further accidents.

The road has been experiencing heavy traffic due to a diversion from Migori Bridge, which is currently under maintenance, a factor traders say may be contributing to the increasing accidents.

County officials have also warned drivers of heavy commercial vehicles to exercise caution when approaching the notorious junction, particularly during the rainy season when roads become slippery.

Caleb Opondi, the County Executive Committee member for Public Health and Medical Services, confirmed the incident. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the county referral morgue, while the injured were rushed to the facility’s emergency care wing for treatment.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
