AFC Leopards strengthened their push for the Kenya Premier League (KPL) title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tusker FC at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

The encounter was characterised by tactical discipline and cautious play in the first half, with neither side willing to take undue risks. Tusker dominated possession at times but found it difficult to penetrate a well-organised Leopards defence, which remained compact and alert throughout.

Leopards, on the other hand, focused on counterattacks, but their forward forays often broke down before producing clear scoring opportunities.

The second half saw a marked increase in tempo as both teams grew more adventurous. Leopards began pressing higher up the pitch and committing more players forward, forcing Tusker into hurried decisions and giving themselves a territorial advantage.

Sustained pressure created a series of set-piece chances, but Tusker’s defence held firm for much of the half. It was not until the 81st minute that the deadlock was broken. Hassan Beja calmly slotted home a well-executed team move, sending the Leopards fans into celebration and putting the home side ahead.

In the closing stages, AFC Leopards managed the game with composure, slowing the tempo and maintaining defensive solidity to preserve their slender lead. Tusker pushed forward in search of an equaliser but failed to find the cutting edge needed to breach the Leopards backline.

The win boosts AFC Leopards’ title hopes, leaving them second on 49 points, seven behind league leaders Gor Mahia. Tusker remain seventh on 37 points as the season enters a crucial phase.

Elsewhere in the KPL on Sunday, Posta Rangers edged Kariobangi Sharks 2-1, Kakamega Homeboyz drew 1-1 with Bandari FC, Ulinzi Stars defeated Nairobi United 2-1, and Murang’a Seal shared the spoils with Mathare United in a 1-1 draw.

With just a few games remaining, the race at the top of the table is heating up, and Leopards will hope to maintain their momentum as the season enters its decisive stretch.
