US President Donald Trump has reportedly ordered a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions with Iran following failed diplomatic talks aimed at resolving the country’s nuclear programme dispute.
In a series of statements shared on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump said the move was in response to Iran’s refusal to abandon what he described as its “nuclear ambitions” during negotiations held in Islamabad.
Claims of “Immediate Blockade”
Trump stated that the United States Navy had been instructed to begin blocking all vessels entering or leaving the strategic waterway, which is a critical global oil transit route.
He wrote:
“Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.”
He further warned that any Iranian forces targeting US or commercial vessels would face severe retaliation.
“Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!” he added.
The remarks have not been independently verified by official US defence channels at the time of publication.
Failed High-Level Negotiations
The statement comes after reported high-level talks between US and Iranian delegations in Pakistan, which included Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
US Vice President JD Vance is said to have led the American delegation alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner.
According to accounts from the talks, discussions made partial progress but failed to reach a final agreement, particularly over Iran’s nuclear programme.
Strategic Waterway at the Centre of Tensions
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global crude oil shipments pass daily. Any disruption in the waterway typically triggers concern across global energy markets.
Trump accused Iran of failing to uphold earlier commitments to keep the strait open, alleging that the country had engaged in actions that threatened commercial shipping routes.
He also suggested that “other countries” may be involved in enforcing the blockade, though no specific allies were named.
Military Escalation Claims
In his posts, Trump claimed that US forces were prepared for further escalation if necessary, warning that Iran could face additional military consequences if tensions continued.
He also referenced ongoing US naval activity in the region, including mine-clearing operations and warship transits through the strait.
Iran has not yet issued an official response to the reported blockade order.
Rising Global Concerns
If confirmed, the move would mark a major escalation in US–Iran tensions and could have significant implications for global oil markets and regional security.
However, defence officials and international bodies have not independently confirmed the blockade order, and details surrounding operational implementation remain unclear.
As the situation develops, attention is focused on whether diplomatic channels can be revived or whether the standoff will deepen further into a broader military confrontation.
