Security agencies in Mandera County have been placed on high alert following an attack by suspected militants targeting a police camp in Lafey Sub-County, leaving one officer and two civilians injured.

According to security reports, the incident occurred at around 5:10 p.m. on Friday when a group of approximately 8 to 10 armed assailants believed to be linked to Al-Shabaab approached the Fino Special Operations Group Camp from the eastern direction.

The attackers reportedly fired several Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) toward the facility, one of which struck within the camp and destroyed a toilet block, while others landed near the adjacent Fino Centre trading area. The assault was accompanied by sustained gunfire involving PKM machine guns and AK-47 rifles, triggering a firefight that lasted for more than 30 minutes.

Security personnel at the camp responded and managed to repel the attackers, forcing them to retreat. Reinforcements were later deployed to secure the area and restore calm.

A police officer sustained a knee injury during the exchange of fire. Two civilians who were caught in the vicinity of the trading centre also suffered injuries — an 18-year-old and a 25-year-old man — both reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical attention.

Following the incident, multi-agency security teams launched clearance operations across Lafey Sub-County, with patrols intensified to track down the fleeing militants and prevent further attacks.

Authorities have since maintained heightened security across the region as investigations and pursuit operations continue.
