Police in Mtwapa, Kilifi County, have arrested a suspected member of a notorious gang believed to be behind a spate of robberies and drug trafficking incidents in the area. The arrest followed a public tip-off that led officers to a guesthouse along Biashara Street, where the gang was reportedly hiding.

Acting swiftly, officers from Mtwapa Police Station mounted a sting operation near Bemu Guest House. They intercepted three suspects, managing to arrest one while the other two fled the scene.

“Upon searching him, officers recovered a backpack containing three smartphones suspected to be stolen, seven and a half rolls of dry green plant material believed to be cannabis, a kitchen knife, and a taser,” the National Police Service confirmed.

The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal gangs operating along Kenya’s coast. The arrested suspect is being held at Mtwapa Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days. All recovered items are being held as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police say the gang has been terrorising residents in and around Biashara Street, prompting fear among locals. The operation was made possible through timely information provided by members of the public, which the police have credited for the successful takedown.

“Police are following crucial leads and are in hot pursuit of the two remaining suspects,” the statement added.

This latest operation comes amid a broader national crackdown on organised crime, with recent arrests in Makueni, Embu, and Mombasa indicating a renewed push by law enforcement to combat insecurity, drugs, and digital exploitation rings.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with police to expose criminal networks and protect communities.
