Cape Verde marked their FIFA World Cup debut in remarkable fashion after holding football giants Spain to a hard-fought 0-0 draw in one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far.
The Blue Sharks, representing a nation of just over 500,000 people, produced a disciplined and determined performance to frustrate the 2010 world champions and secure a memorable point on football’s biggest stage.
As expected, Spain controlled possession for much of the match and created the better scoring opportunities, but they were repeatedly denied by Cape Verde’s resilient defence and inspired goalkeeper Vozinha.
Spain nearly broke the deadlock in the first half when Ferran Torres struck the crossbar after being set up by Marc Cucurella. The rebound fell to Mikel Oyarzabal, whose close-range header was brilliantly saved by the veteran Cape Verde goalkeeper.
Vozinha continued his heroics moments later, producing a stunning save to keep out Aymeric Laporte’s powerful header and preserve the deadlock heading into the halftime break.
Despite spending long periods without the ball, Cape Verde remained organised at the back and occasionally threatened on the counterattack, giving Spain’s defence something to think about.
Spain resumed their search for a breakthrough after the restart, with Fabián Ruiz firing over from distance as pressure mounted on the tournament favourites. However, Cape Verde’s defensive structure remained intact and prevented Spain from finding clear openings.
In an effort to spark their attack, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente introduced teenage star Lamine Yamal in the 71st minute. The youngster injected pace and creativity into Spain’s forward line, but Cape Verde continued to stand firm.
Oyarzabal had Spain’s final clear chance late in the match but failed to hit the target, allowing Cape Verde to complete a famous defensive display and secure a historic result.
The final whistle sparked celebrations among the Cape Verde players and supporters as the tournament debutants earned their first-ever FIFA World Cup point. The draw will go down as one of the greatest achievements in the nation’s football history, while Spain will be left disappointed after failing to break down their spirited opponents.
For Cape Verde, the result serves as a powerful statement that they belong on the world stage and will not be underestimated in the remainder of the tournament.
