BUNGOMA – Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has called on residents to elect a Senator who fully understands and faithfully executes the constitutional responsibilities of the office, arguing that the county deserves effective oversight and strong representation at the national level.

Speaking during the final send-off of the late Leonard Wanyonyi Nyongesa, the Senior Assistant Chief of Maliki Sub-Location, Lusaka said the Senate’s oversight role is clearly defined in the Constitution and should not be confused with responsibilities assigned to Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).

The Governor maintained that the office of the Senator is primarily mandated to provide oversight over county governments, legislate on matters affecting counties, and represent county interests in the Senate.

“Bungoma deserves a Senator who understands the constitutional role of oversight and can effectively champion the county’s interests at the national level, not one preoccupied with roles reserved for Members of the County Assembly,” Lusaka said.

Lusaka emphasized that oversight should be carried out objectively and professionally, without political bias or personal interests. He urged leaders to remain focused on their constitutional responsibilities instead of engaging in political theatrics.

As the country prepares for the 2027 General Election, the Governor warned residents against what he described as political gimmicks disguised as oversight, urging voters to carefully evaluate leaders seeking elective office.

“Bungoma deserves sober, objective oversight, not political gimmicks meant to confuse voters into granting another term,” he added.

During his address, Lusaka also lauded President William Ruto for unveiling a new welfare package for chiefs and assistant chiefs aimed at strengthening grassroots administration. The package includes promotions for all trained administrators by one rank, the issuance of digital tablets, the procurement of more than 3,000 vehicles to improve mobility, as well as specialized induction and paralegal training.

The Governor challenged chiefs and assistant chiefs to take advantage of the enhanced support to improve service delivery and accelerate the implementation of government development programmes at the grassroots.

He further highlighted several development projects undertaken by his administration, including the completion of the Naitiri–Brigadier Road and other infrastructure initiatives designed to improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth across Bungoma County.

In his capacity as President Ruto’s Western Kenya re-election coordinator, Lusaka rallied residents to support the Head of State’s bid for a second term in the 2027 General Election. He argued that continuity in leadership would ensure ongoing development projects are completed while attracting more investment opportunities to the region.

His remarks come amid heightened political activity across the country as leaders intensify campaigns and position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with constitutional oversight and accountability emerging as key issues in county politics.
