Gor Mahia’s Lesley Otieno battles against Mohamed Chibi of Pyramids
Gor Mahia’s hopes of progressing in the CAF Champions League suffered a major setback after the Kenyan champions fell to a 2–0 defeat against Egyptian giants Pyramids FC at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.
Two first-half goals from Walid El Karti and Mahmoud Saber gave Pyramids a commanding advantage in the first leg of the preliminary-round tie, leaving Gor Mahia with a difficult task ahead of the return leg in Cairo.
The visitors struck as early as the fifth minute when El Karti found the breakthrough, capitalising on Gor Mahia’s defensive vulnerability to put Pyramids in front.
The early goal was a major blow to Charles Akonnor’s side, who had hoped to use home advantage and the support of the Green Army to establish an advantage before travelling to Egypt.
Gor Mahia had started the match brightly and created promising moments in the opening exchanges, but they were unable to convert their opportunities into a goal.
Pyramids, meanwhile, gradually settled into the contest and used their experience to frustrate the Kenyan champions.
Pyramids strike again before halftime
Just when Gor Mahia appeared to be heading into halftime with only a one-goal deficit, Pyramids doubled their advantage.
Saber scored deep into first-half stoppage time to give the Egyptian side a 2–0 lead at the break.
The timing of the second goal proved particularly damaging for Gor Mahia as it left the hosts facing a two-goal deficit going into the second half.
According to CAF’s official match report, El Karti opened the scoring after six minutes, while Saber added the second in first-half stoppage time.
Gor Mahia fail to find a way back
Akonnor attempted to change the momentum of the match through substitutions, introducing fresh legs as Gor Mahia searched for a way back into the contest.
However, Pyramids remained disciplined and protected their advantage effectively.
The Kenyan champions were unable to find the goal they needed to reduce the deficit, allowing the visitors to leave Nairobi with a valuable two-goal advantage.
The final whistle confirmed a 2–0 victory for Pyramids and placed Gor Mahia under considerable pressure ahead of the second leg.
Difficult task awaits in Cairo
Gor Mahia will now travel to Egypt knowing that they must score at least twice without conceding if they are to force the tie back in their favour.
The second leg is scheduled for September 13, 2026, in Cairo, one week after Sunday’s first-leg encounter. Gor Mahia had confirmed the date before the match.
The Kenyan champions will therefore need a much-improved attacking display and greater defensive concentration if they are to overturn the two-goal deficit.
The challenge is particularly significant given Pyramids’ continental pedigree and the advantage they now carry into the return match.
Gor Mahia still enjoy financial boost
Despite the disappointing result on the pitch, the match provided some encouragement off it.
Gor Mahia reportedly collected KSh3.835 million from 11,282 tickets sold for the Champions League encounter at Nyayo Stadium.
The figures were confirmed by club treasurer Gerphas Okuku, who thanked supporters for turning up to back the team.
The strong turnout underlines the continued popularity of Gor Mahia and the appetite among Kenyan football fans for high-level continental football.
For now, however, attention will turn to Cairo, where Gor Mahia face the difficult task of overturning a 2–0 deficit and keeping their CAF Champions League campaign alive.
