On April 2, 2025, during a visit to Maua in Meru County, President William Ruto emphasized his longstanding relationship with the Mt. Kenya region, stating, “The friendship I have built with the region goes beyond 20 years. No one can come between me and the people of Mt Kenya.”

This statement comes amid political tensions following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and subsequent removal of his allies from key parliamentary positions. Gachagua has accused President Ruto of sidelining Mt. Kenya leaders and taking credit for projects initiated by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

President Ruto’s weeklong tour of the Mt. Kenya region includes visits to nine counties: Laikipia, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, and Kiambu. The tour focuses on inspecting and launching development projects such as road infrastructure, affordable housing, fresh produce markets, electricity connectivity, and water and irrigation initiatives.

During his address, President Ruto also responded to Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma’s request to include former Cabinet Secretaries Peter Munya and Mithika Linturi in his administration, indicating that discussions were underway.
