Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has officially been appointed as the acting leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), following the passing of his younger brother and party leader, Raila Odinga. The decision was reached unanimously by ODM’s National Executive Committee (NEC) during a special meeting held on Thursday morning.
In a statement released by the party, ODM confirmed that Oburu’s appointment takes effect immediately and will remain in force until the party’s governing organs issue further directions on the leadership structure. The NEC emphasized that the move was necessary to ensure continuity, stability, and unity within the party during this difficult period of mourning and transition.
Oburu Oginga’s selection marks a significant moment in the party’s history. Having been a close political ally and elder brother to Raila, his appointment symbolizes both a continuation of the Odinga family legacy and an effort to maintain internal cohesion within ODM.
