Musalia Mudavadi: Gen Z Opposition Will Struggle to Defeat Ruto in 2027

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has downplayed the possibility of Kenya’s Gen Z-led opposition defeating President William Ruto in the 2027 elections, stating that it will be an uphill battle.

Speaking during a political engagement, Mudavadi acknowledged the growing influence of young voters but insisted that their efforts to unseat Ruto would face significant challenges. “Itakuwa vigumu (It will be difficult),” he remarked, emphasizing that defeating an incumbent president requires more than just online activism and street protests.

He urged young people to engage in structured political processes if they intend to bring meaningful change. “Politics is not just about social media. If you want power, you must organize, strategize, and understand governance,” Mudavadi advised.

His comments come at a time when Kenya’s Gen Z population has increasingly expressed dissatisfaction with the government, mainly through digital platforms and protests. The group has played a significant role in shaping public discourse, challenging policies, and demanding accountability from leaders.

Despite Mudavadi’s remarks, some political analysts believe that Gen Z could still be a major force in 2027 if they translate their online momentum into a structured political movement. Opposition figures have also been courting the youth vote, hoping to turn their frustrations into a coordinated campaign against Ruto’s administration.

With the next general election still two years away, the political landscape remains unpredictable. However, Mudavadi’s statement signals the ruling coalition’s awareness of the growing youth-driven opposition and the potential it holds in reshaping Kenya’s political future.
