Over 40,000 youths from Nairobi are set to be recruited for the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project, an initiative aimed at enhancing the city’s appeal to investors and boosting economic growth.

This effort is part of the national government’s Climate WorX initiative, which encompasses activities such as cleaning Nairobi’s rivers, constructing new sewer lines, developing social housing units, and managing solid waste.

Currently, 22,000 youths are actively engaged in the project following its launch by President William Ruto on Monday. An additional 18,000 youths are scheduled to join next month, supplementing the workforce already involved in various affordable housing construction sites across the city.

During a development tour of Dagoretti South, Dagoretti North, and Westlands constituencies on Wednesday, President Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki urged young people to participate in the two-year project, highlighting their essential role in its success. President Ruto emphasized the government’s commitment to creating job opportunities for youth and women to ensure they have a source of income and to propel the country forward. He noted that the Climate WorX program currently employs 22,000 youths and is expanding to include 18,000 more.

Deputy President Kindiki reiterated the administration’s priority to engage as many youths and women as possible in gainful employment through various initiatives, including the Regeneration Program. He mentioned that the government is providing job opportunities through affordable housing projects, the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project, and other programs such as Kazi Kwa Ground, online jobs via Kazi Mtandaoni through ICT hubs, and international employment under the Kazi Majuu program.

On the third day of the development tour, President Ruto inspected ongoing projects such as the construction of Mutuini Fresh Produce Modern Market, Riruta Modern Market, and the expansion of Dagoretti Sub-County Hospital. He also inaugurated the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Laboratory at PC Kinyanjui Technical and Training Institute and laid the foundation stone for the Dagoretti Jitume Centre of Excellence (ICT Hub) in Dagoretti South constituency.

In Dagoretti North, the President assessed the construction of the Kawangware Primary Junior Secondary Tuition Block and new classrooms at Gatina Primary School, officially opening the Gatina Junior Secondary Tuition Block. In Westlands constituency, he inaugurated the Kangemi Junior School tuition block and reviewed the construction of the Kangemi Bridge-James Gichuru Junction-Rironi Highway.

Accompanied by the Deputy President and Nairobi leaders, President Ruto addressed residents at various stops, including Kawangware, Riruta, Congo, Stage 2, Stage 56, and Kangemi Centre, assuring them of the government’s unwavering commitment to the development of these constituencies and the entire city. He reaffirmed his dedication to uniting the country for long-term prosperity, stating that the focus should be on development rather than divisive politics. Deputy President Kindiki emphasized that development is achievable only in a united and peaceful nation, free from discrimination, and called for patriotism and unity to build a strong nation.
