A violent dispute over grave-digging fees in Likuyani, Trans Nzoia County, has left three people dead and several homes torched in a tragic escalation of conflict. The deadly confrontation erupted when two rival groups clashed over burial-related charges, turning a community gathering into a scene of chaos and destruction.

According to eyewitnesses, the conflict began as a heated argument between local youth groups over who had the right to dig graves in the area. What started as a verbal altercation quickly escalated into a violent confrontation, with both sides arming themselves with crude weapons. The fight led to the deaths of three individuals, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

In retaliation, angry residents set fire to several houses, forcing families to flee for safety. The arson attacks left many people homeless, adding to the distress within the already tense community. Authorities were called to the scene to restore order, and police officers have since been deployed to prevent further violence.

Local leaders have condemned the incident, urging residents to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than resorting to violence. Likuyani Deputy County Commissioner urged warring groups to cooperate with law enforcement officers in identifying the perpetrators. “It is unfortunate that lives have been lost over an issue that could have been resolved peacefully. We urge residents to embrace dialogue to prevent further bloodshed,” he said.

The incident highlights deep-rooted tensions in the area, where disputes over land and burial rights have occasionally led to violence. Security officers have launched investigations, and those found responsible will face legal action. Meanwhile, affected families are appealing for humanitarian assistance as they try to rebuild their lives after the destruction.
