Kisumu County has taken a bold step toward revitalizing its sports infrastructure and nurturing athletic talent, with Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o officially launching a modern boxing ring at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground on Monday evening.
The new facility marks a significant milestone in the county’s broader efforts to promote youth participation in boxing and create structured pathways for emerging talent.
“Last evening, we hit a major milestone in our commitment to nurturing young talent with the launch of a brand-new boxing ring,” Governor Nyong’o posted on his official X account. “This is a huge step forward in developing boxing talent right here in Kisumu.”
The launch comes just ahead of the much-anticipated Kisumu vs. Uganda boxers’ tournament, set for August 18, injecting fresh momentum into local preparations. The Governor also announced that the county government will provide the Kisumu boxing team with full boxing kits to ensure they’re equipped for the event.
The project is just the beginning. Governor Nyong’o revealed that Kisumu County plans to roll out similar boxing rings across other towns and municipalities, expanding access to training facilities and sporting opportunities for youth throughout the region.
“Sports are vital in shaping the future of our youth,” he said, emphasizing that the county remains committed to sustained investment in sports infrastructure and youth empowerment programs.
This latest initiative aligns with Kisumu’s growing reputation as a regional sporting hub, a status further reinforced by a recent Sh800 million allocation from the State Department for Sports to upgrade the iconic Moi Stadium.
The Moi Stadium revamp, expected to be completed by the end of 2026, is one of the most ambitious sports infrastructure projects in Western Kenya. Engineers have already assessed the facility, and Kisumu County CEC for Sports Beatrice Odongo said the stadium is envisioned as “one of the best facilities that will be used not just within Kisumu, but across East Africa.”
The launch of the boxing ring, combined with the planned stadium upgrade, signals a strategic shift in Kisumu County’s approach to youth development, positioning sports as both a tool for empowerment and a driver of economic activity.
