President William Ruto has declared a seven-day period of national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a “towering figure of democracy” whose contributions shaped Kenya’s political history. In his official address from State House, Nairobi, Ruto announced that national flags across Kenya and all its diplomatic missions abroad will fly at half-mast until Odinga is laid to rest.
The President also confirmed that Raila Odinga will be accorded a state funeral with full honors, a gesture reflecting his immense role in the nation’s democratic journey. Ruto expressed his condolences to the Odinga family, calling the late leader a “patriot, reformer, and statesman who dedicated his entire life to the service of the people.” He praised Odinga’s tireless fight for justice, equality, and unity, noting that his legacy would forever remain engraved in Kenya’s history.
“We have lost one of Africa’s greatest sons,” said Ruto. “Raila Odinga was a courageous freedom fighter who endured hardship and imprisonment in pursuit of a more just and democratic Kenya. His voice spoke truth to power, and his spirit inspired generations.” The President further announced that he would suspend all public engagements during the mourning period as the nation reflects on Odinga’s contributions.
To ensure a dignified farewell, Ruto appointed a funeral planning committee co-chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Senator Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother. The committee will coordinate with the Odinga family and government officials to organize the funeral arrangements. Additionally, the Government of India has offered to assist in the repatriation of Odinga’s remains, with a delegation led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi set to travel to India to oversee the process.
President Ruto emphasized that the mourning period is not only for Kenya but also for the entire continent, acknowledging Odinga’s influence across Africa as a champion of democracy and good governance. “Kenya, Africa, and the world mourn a visionary leader who devoted his life to uplifting others,” he said solemnly.
During the mourning period, all public offices, military installations, and schools will observe the directive to fly flags at half-mast. Churches, mosques, and other places of worship have also been encouraged to hold prayer sessions in memory of the late leader.
