Nairobi delegates of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have endorsed Winnie Odinga as their representative from Kibra, a move expected to position her for a seat in the party’s powerful National Executive Council (NEC).
The endorsement was made during a delegates’ meeting held at JOOF in Nairobi, chaired by George Aladwa, with Winnie Odinga in attendance.
Strategic Move Ahead of Party Conference
Aladwa confirmed that Nairobi delegates had unanimously settled on Winnie Odinga as their preferred candidate, linking the decision to the party’s broader leadership structure.
“Tume endorse Winnie Odinga kama mwakilishi wetu…” Aladwa stated.
He explained that the endorsement is part of preparations for the upcoming ODM National Delegates Conference (NDC), where key decisions about the party’s leadership are expected to be made.
“Tuko na NDC yetu… na kama delegates lazima tukubaliane vile tutaenda kwa hiyo mkutano,” he added.
Replacing Raila as Nairobi Representative
According to Aladwa, the position had previously been held by Raila Odinga, who played a significant role in representing Nairobi delegates within the party.
He revealed that consultations had been ongoing for nearly two months as Nairobi leaders sought consensus on a new representative.
“Tumekuwa na vikao kwa miezi kama mbili tukisema kwamba tunataka kuwa na mwakilishi,” he said.
With the endorsement, Winnie Odinga is now set to represent Nairobi in key ODM decision-making organs, including the NEC and the central committee.
Boost for Winnie Odinga’s Political Profile
The move is seen as a significant boost for Winnie Odinga’s political standing within ODM, potentially elevating her influence in the party’s top leadership ranks.
Party officials indicated that her endorsement aligns with efforts to strengthen leadership representation and bring fresh energy into ODM’s structures.
Amid Internal Party Tensions
The development comes at a time when ODM is grappling with internal divisions and political realignments.
Aladwa, a strong supporter of the broad-based government approach, emphasized the need for unity within the party, noting that the endorsement is part of efforts to stabilise ODM.
Nairobi delegates expressed confidence that bringing Winnie Odinga closer to the party’s leadership would help steady the party amid recent turbulence.
What Lies Ahead
All eyes are now on the upcoming ODM National Delegates Conference, where Winnie Odinga’s endorsement is expected to be formalised and potentially cement her place in the party’s top decision-making organs.
The outcome could play a crucial role in shaping ODM’s direction as the country gears up for the 2027 General Election.
