Trans Nzoia, March 22, 2026 – The Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) has strongly condemned the violent attack on two journalists who were assaulted while covering a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia County, on Friday.

The journalists, Gilbert Sitati of Standard Group and George Njoroge of Mediamax, were reportedly attacked in connection with their reporting on a controversial fake ambulance procurement deal linked to Harambee House.

KEG President Zubeidah Kananu described the incident as a blatant affront to media freedom and the public’s right to information.

“Any attempt to intimidate, harass, or harm journalists for executing this duty undermines democratic principles and erodes accountability,” Kananu said in a statement issued on Saturday.

She expressed deep concern over the rising trend of hostility and violence against journalists, particularly in politically charged environments.

The guild has called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to launch a thorough and transparent investigation into the attack, urging that all those responsible—including those who sanctioned or enabled the assault—be identified and prosecuted.

“Accountability must not stop at the foot soldiers,” Kananu warned.

She also urged political leaders and their aides linked to the case to cooperate fully with investigators, stressing that political spaces should not become lawless zones where the press is targeted with impunity.

Kananu further stated that if state agencies fail to act decisively, KEG is prepared to pursue private prosecutions against individuals linked to the assault.

Members of the public, witnesses, and media practitioners have been encouraged to document and report any acts of intimidation or violence against journalists to KEG or the authorities.
