Nyahururu town was thrown into turmoil on Monday after protesters clashed with police in running battles during demonstrations against the rising cost of fuel.
The protests, largely driven by youths and boda boda operators, saw major roads blocked as demonstrators lit bonfires, placed stones on highways, and disrupted normal business activities. Transport within and around the town was paralysed for several hours as tensions escalated.
Police officers moved in to disperse the crowds using teargas as confrontations spread across different parts of the town. Protesters, some chanting anti-government slogans, scattered through streets while officers pursued them in efforts to restore order.
Motorists and commuters were left stranded as key transport routes linking Nyahururu to neighbouring areas were temporarily impassable.
The unrest reflects growing public anger over recent increases in fuel prices, which have sparked protests and transport disruptions in various parts of the country. Several towns have in recent days experienced similar demonstrations as pressure mounts on authorities to address the cost of living.
Security agencies have since called for calm as they work to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
