A major restructuring has been carried out within President William Ruto’s security team following the removal of Assistant Inspector General Noah Kirwa Maiyo as Commandant of the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU).

In the latest changes announced by the National Police Service, Maiyo has been reassigned to the Vigilance Department at Police Headquarters. He has now been replaced by William Sawe, formerly the Commanding Officer of the elite Recce Squad.

The reshuffle also saw several other senior officers affected. PEU Deputy Commandant Juda Mathews Gwiyo was directed to proceed on leave ahead of retirement, while George Kirera was appointed as the new deputy commandant. At the same time, Josphat Sirma was named the new head of the Recce Squad.

The changes come amid increased scrutiny over presidential security arrangements following a reported security breach during President Ruto’s recent public engagement in Ganze, Kilifi County.

Maiyo had assumed leadership of the Presidential Escort Unit in July 2024 after taking over from William Yiampoy. He has been part of the presidential security apparatus for several years, including during Ruto’s tenure as Deputy President.

The latest shake-up is seen as part of broader efforts to tighten security around the Head of State and reorganize elite police units tasked with presidential protection.
