Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has urged the creation of a “fertile policy environment” to fast-track the growth of Africa’s tourism and hospitality sectors, citing the need for innovation, sustainability, and community-driven approaches.
Speaking at the official opening of the Hotel Expo-Kenya and the Africa Food Show, Miano outlined the government’s commitment to building a strong foundation for the industry through public-private partnerships, skills development, and digital transformation. She noted that tourism is increasingly becoming a “key driver of urban growth and economic resilience” and must be given the tools to thrive in a competitive global market.
The CS acknowledged the sector’s persistent challenges, including infrastructure gaps, security concerns, and the pressure to innovate while embracing sustainable practices. She called on industry stakeholders to adopt forward-looking strategies that place local communities at the heart of tourism planning.
Miano emphasized the need to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), support local artisans, and prioritize local sourcing — a move she said would both strengthen communities and enhance the authenticity of Kenya’s tourism offerings. “Modern travelers are looking for experiences rooted in culture, sustainability, and genuine local engagement,” she stressed.
Industry leaders present at the event echoed her sentiments, calling for a departure from traditional tourism models in favor of digitally-driven, eco-friendly, and accessible tourism experiences.
Miano concluded by expressing confidence that with collaboration, innovation, and responsible planning, Africa can become a global leader in sustainable and inclusive tourism models.
