Tension erupted in Ngoliba, Kiambu County, as rowdy youths stoned county officials during a visit to the disputed Ngoliba Market. The officials, who were on a fact-finding mission regarding the ongoing land dispute, were forced to flee as chaos broke out.
The officials had arrived at the market to assess concerns raised by traders and local leaders about its ownership and allocation. However, moments after their arrival, a group of agitated youths confronted them, accusing the county government of attempting to take over the market. As tensions escalated, the confrontation turned violent, with stones and other projectiles being hurled at the officials and their security personnel.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attack appeared to be premeditated. “It was clear that these youths had been mobilized before the officials arrived,” said a trader who witnessed the incident. “The situation turned chaotic so fast that everyone had to run for safety.”
Security personnel quickly intervened, dispersing the angry crowd and escorting the officials out of the market. No serious injuries were reported, but several vehicles were damaged in the fracas.
Local leaders condemned the attack, calling for calm and urging residents to allow due process in resolving the market dispute. “Violence is not the answer,” one leader stated. “We must sit down and negotiate a peaceful resolution to the ownership issues surrounding Ngoliba Market.”
The disputed market has been at the center of controversy for years, with allegations that private developers have laid claim to the land, leading to conflicts with traders who have operated there for decades. Some traders argue that they have been unfairly targeted for eviction, while the county government insists that it is simply trying to regulate and improve market operations.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi has yet to issue a statement on the incident, but county officials have assured traders that consultations will continue to find a lasting solution. Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
Residents have called for an urgent meeting with county leaders to resolve the market ownership dispute and prevent further violence. They have also urged the government to take action against individuals inciting youths to disrupt official activities.
As the tension continues, local authorities have deployed additional security personnel in Ngoliba to prevent further confrontations and ensure business operations continue without disruption.
